On January 23, 2005, the third president of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, was inaugurated. About 500,000 people gathered on Independence Square in Kyiv on the occasion of the celebrations. 59 official foreign delegations confirmed their participation in the celebrations.

At 1:30 p.m., Yushchenko, together with his wife and children, arrived at the Maidan, where he delivered his inaugural speech.
