Reference: Igor Yukhnovsky (1925–2024) — Ukrainian theoretical physicist, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, public and political figure. He was a member of parliament for several terms, headed the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, and became the first leader of the opposition parliamentary group ‘People's Council’ in the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR.

Rally against the "Kharkiv Agreements"

Background: The battles for Ilovaisk in August 2014 were one of the most tragic events of the Russian-Ukrainian war, when Ukrainian troops, largely formed from volunteer battalions, found themselves surrounded and suffered heavy losses while withdrawing from the so-called "green corridor". In total, more than 360 servicemen and volunteers were killed, hundreds were wounded or captured, and for a long time official statistics did not reflect the real number of deaths from volunteer units. The problem of their legal recognition and social security for the families of the deceased remained unresolved for years, which caused a public outcry and the gradual adoption of decisions to include volunteers in the system of state honors and compensations.

Battles for Ilovaisk: Commemoration

Reference: On September 4, 1991, a rally gathered near the walls of the Verkhovna Rada, where people demanded that the national flag be raised above the dome of the Verkhovna Rada. After lengthy negotiations, MPs voted to raise the flag.

Reference: The adopted Law of Ukraine “On the Principles of State Language Policy” (2012), unofficially known as the “Kivalov-Kolesnichenko Law,” allowed the status of “regional language” to be granted if it was used by more than 10% of the population of a region or district, which effectively expanded the scope of use of the Russian language. This sparked public opposition and protests, as the law was seen as a threat to the establishment of Ukrainian as the sole state language. A significant number of scholars and civil society organizations considered it a tool for political manipulation in the language issue. In 2018, the Constitutional Court ruled the law unconstitutional and repealed it.
