An experimental program on national television, 1989. A television session featuring “doctor” Anatoly Kashpirovsky, hosted by Valentin Shcherbachov. At the beginning of the program, the host discusses the surgery that took place live on air. During the surgery, Kashpirovsky used hypnosis to anesthetize a patient whose body did not respond to general anesthesia. He also explains the guidelines that must be followed before the session. 

The main focus of the program is the treatment of childhood enuresis. Before the session, Kashpirovsky offers advice in the studio on how children should behave during the session and introduces viewers to his treatment methods. At the end of the program, Valentin Shcherbachov reads questions from viewers.

Background: Anatoly Kashpirovsky is a psychotherapist accused of quackery. He became known for his so-called televised psychotherapy sessions and gained popularity in the field of alternative medicine.

In 1989, he conducted several “hypnosis” sessions on Soviet television. During two televised sessions (1988 and 1989), he administered anesthesia to three patients: Lyubov Grabovskaya during the removal of a breast tumor, Lesya Yurshova, and Olga Ignatova during surgical operations. The first session took place on October 9 on Central Television.

Viewers believed in Kashpirovsky’s “gift”—this brought him great popularity. He held meetings with artists, medical professionals, and public figures. He was awarded the USSR State Prize and received a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree. In 1993, he was elected to the state duma of russia.
