Reference: Oles Shevchenko is a Ukrainian dissident and political figure, a participant in the national liberation movement, a member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group. In 1980, he was sentenced to 5 years in camps and 3 years in exile for "anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda", released in 1987. After his release, he headed the Kyiv organization of the Ukrainian Helsinki Union, became one of the public leaders of democratic rallies and actions of the late 1980s. People's Deputy of Ukraine of the 1st convocation, member of the "People's Rada" faction, co-author of the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of Ukraine, was a member of the leadership of the URP, NRU and UNP, headed veterans' and human rights associations.
