“This is our history...”: folk customs and traditions

National Television Company of Ukraine, 2001. The program “This is our history...” was created for the 50th anniversary of Ukrainian television and uses fragments of programs from different years.

Excerpts from the program “From Folk Sources” are used. It tells about folk customs and traditions at Christmas: members of a folk ensemble enter a village house, begin to sing carols, and the host greets the carolers. Green holidays in Ukraine: girls in wreaths, a folk group from the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine, decorating the yard with greenery, Kupala songs and rituals. Makovia holiday rituals: boys bring pumpkins from the gardens to make a milestone with a pumpkin on top, preparations for the blessing of bouquets on Makovia, people in embroidered shirts around the fire. Traditions on Spas: men with baskets walk through the village, women and children pick wildflowers, a girl treats children to apples, hosts prepare a festive table, and hostesses greet spectators with holiday greetings.
