Icons on a flounder

2021, 2 min

2021, Suspilne Kherson. This episode of the “Made in Ukraine” program explores examples of modern icon painting on flounder — a form of art that has long been known in Ukraine, particularly in the history of the Chumaks. No examples of this art have survived to the present day. The traditions of this art form are now being revived by historian and reenactor Andriy Lopushynskyi and artist Oksana Osnach, who discuss the origins of the project and its implementation.

In the video: views of Kherson; excerpts from scholarly articles on icon painting on fish in Ukrainian and Russian; black-and-white photographs of images painted on fish; the book "Ukraine from Trypillia to the Present in the Works of Contemporary Artists"; icons on flounder; paintings with secular subjects painted on fish; a work by artist Oksana Osnach; the process of creating an icon of the Virgin Mary on a fish.
