A Hero of Our Time: The Story of Maxim Shymko

The documentary film “Hero of the New Era” is dedicated to Maksym Shymko, a participant in the Revolution of Dignity and a Hero of Ukraine. His family and friends recall his life, his participation in Euromaidan, and his character. The film features photographs and video footage from the Shymko family archive.

Commentary is provided by Maksym Shymko’s mother, Zoya Kuzmenko; teacher Oleksandr Shevchuk; friend Yevhen Tychuk; and Vasyl Lyubunya — ataman of the “Vovchyi kurin” unit of the Ukrainian Cossack Regiment named after Ivan Bohun.

The film was produced by writer Tetyana Dovhan, cinematographers Vadym Demets and Oleksandr Bazuk, and editor Kateryna Kyryliuk.

Reference: Maksym Shymko was a participant in the Revolution of Dignity and a Hero of the Nebesna sotnia. He was killed on February 20, 2014, on Instytutska Street in Kyiv during the shooting of protesters. He was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine for his civic courage and self-sacrifice.
