"How the Volynians Saved the eastern people": stories of those who survived the famine of 1947

February 19, 1997. Volyn television. The program "How the Volynians saved the Orientals" tells about the famine of 1947 in the east of Ukraine and the people who during this period were forced to leave their homes and seek salvation in Volyn.

The material contains eyewitness memories of hunger, moving from the eastern regions and living in a new place. The story of Hryhoriy Gurtovoy, director of the Torchyn Museum of Local History and an eyewitness to the famine of 1947, is mentioned. He talks about his move from the east to Volyn, Lutsk, as well as how he settled in the village of Torchyn, where he lives and works. The stories are complemented by materials from the regional archive and archival newspapers reproducing the events of that time.
