Volyn wedding: traditions passed on to generations

2002, 8 min

September 29, 2002. First national.

The plot introduces the Volyn wedding ceremony, which is reproduced in the Kyiv region. Wedding participants perform traditional activities: matchmakers kiss the groom, cover their heads with a handkerchief, tie their hands with a towel and circle the table three times. During the celebration, wedding songs are sung, the parents bless the young, and the matchmaker cuts the loaf and says wishes for happiness, well-being and harmony. The brides treat each other to a cow, the guests dance to the accordion and join the feast.

Wedding participants Hanna Pivnyova and Tamara Solodka share their memories of their own weddings and tell why it is important to pass on wedding traditions to children and grandchildren. They recall customs, family relationships, and their own experiences as mother-in-law and mother-in-law.
