Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, fierce fighting has been going on for Mariupol, and Ukrainian troops, cut off from the main forces of the Armed Forces, were forced to retreat to the territory of the Azovstal steel plant.

The fighting at the plant lasted from March 18 to May 20, 2022. Not only the military but also civilians took refuge at the plant. The first wave of civilian evacuations from Azovstal began on April 30, with 20 people being evacuated. During the second wave, on May 12, 500 civilians were released.

The evacuation of the wounded began on May 16, with 264 defenders being transported to the Russian-occupied Olenivka and Novoazovsk.

On May 20, 2022, the Ukrainian military received an order to cease defense. About two thousand soldiers left Azovstal and surrendered. The heroic defense of Mariupol lasted 84 days.
