Olena Stepaniv is the first woman in the world to be enlisted in military service as an officer, a member of the Ukrainian Galician Army and an active participant of the Sichov-Rillet movement. She was born on December 7, 1892 in the village of Vyshnivchyk, Lviv region, was an associate professor at Lviv University and the author of dozens of scientific works in the field of history and geography. During the First World War, she was awarded the medal "For Courage" in the battles for Makivka Mountain.
