The Black Sea Biosphere Reserve is one of the oldest and largest reserves in Ukraine. It was established in 1927 to protect the natural environment and is considered especially valuable because of the large number of wild bird nesting sites. In 1988, the reserve became the first Ukrainian nature reserve to be included in the UNESCO list.
The territory of the reserve covers more than 20 islands, Kherson and part of Mykolaiv regions, and two sea bays - Yagorlytska and Tendrivska.
