Reference: The first presidential election in Ukraine took place on December 1, 1991. Leonid Kravchuk won the election. He took first place in all regions, except for three regions where Vyacheslav Chornovil won.

Also on December 1, 1991, an all-Ukrainian referendum on independence was held. One question was put on the ballot: "Do you confirm the Act of Independence of Ukraine?". The text of the Act, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on August 24, 1991, was printed on the ballot. More than 90% of those who took part in the referendum voted in favor.
