Reference: The Union of Florence was an agreement concluded in 1439 at the Council of Florence between the Roman Catholic and part of the Orthodox Church, which recognized the primacy of the Pope in exchange for promised assistance from the West in the fight against the Ottoman threat. For Ukraine, this union was of great importance: the Kyiv Metropolis, being under the jurisdiction of Constantinople, formally joined the union, which began a long period of confessional search, which later led to the creation of the Union of Brest in 1596 and the establishment of the Uniate (Greek Catholic) tradition.
