Background: On June 17, 1993, as a result of the miners' protests, the Verkhovna Rada decided to hold a referendum on confidence in the parliament and the president, and scheduled it for September 26. On September 21, the government headed by Leonid Kuchma resigned. And on September 24, MPs canceled the decision to hold the referendum. Instead, they scheduled parliamentary elections for March 27, 1994, and presidential elections for June 26.
