"Shakhtar win the UEFA Cup

On May 20, 2009, Shakhtar Donetsk won the UEFA Cup. In the final match in Istanbul, the Ukrainian team led by coach Mircea Lucescu defeated Werder Bremen 2-1.

It was on this day that the UEFA Cup was played for the last time: it was replaced by the Europa League. This is the only European trophy in the history of Ukrainian football since independence. On May 26, 2009, Shakhtar players and coaching staff came to meet with the President of Ukraine. There they were presented with awards.
