Reference: Oleksandr Oleksiyovych Shalimov (January 20, 1918 - February 28, 2006) was a prominent Ukrainian Soviet surgeon, academician of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Medicine. He founded a modern Ukrainian surgical school, introduced more than 800 new techniques, including liver and stomach resection and pancreatic surgery, and organized the Institute of Surgery and Transplantation, which is named after him. Under Shalimov's leadership, the first heart transplant in Ukraine was performed. During his life, he performed about 40,000 operations, published more than 830 scientific papers, and was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.
