Traditional Chernihiv Carving

Chernihiv Television. The episode "Magic Lace Tells..." of the program "Our Openings" from June 2, 2000 is dedicated to the wooden architecture of the city of Chernihiv.

On the video: wooden houses in Chernihiv, exterior of buildings; the presenter talks about the artistic woodcarving of the Chernihiv region, tools for work and varieties of openwork carving; museum exhibition of fragments of building decorations and ornaments.

Reference: Wooden decorative carving on residential buildings in the Chernihiv region forms a local tradition of decoration, which originates from archaic amulet ideas and actively develops during the 19th — early 20th centuries. Ornamentation includes plant motifs, a meander, the "tree of life", birds and towel compositions, which perform a symbolic function of protecting the home and family. This system of decoration reflects a combination of ancient mythological ideas of the local population with the aesthetics of folk housing construction of Left-Bank Ukraine.
