On March 17, 1943, a tragedy occurred in the village of Remel, Rivne region. Polish policemen dressed in German uniforms set fire to the village, throwing grenades through the windows of Ukrainian villagers. After the horrific torture, most of the villagers were shot dead. According to eyewitness accounts, about 800 people died in the village of Remel. Only 70 residents survived.
