Funeral of Patriarch Vladimir I

Patriarch Volodymyr I of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate was born in the Hutsul village of Khymchyn on December 9, 1925. He received his primary education in his native village. At the age of 19, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for participating in the national liberation struggle.

In 1959, he graduated from higher theological courses in Stanislav (now Ivano-Frankivsk), and later from the Moscow Theological Seminary. After his ordination in 1964, he was sent to the village of Kosmach, Kosiv district. He was arrested for "anti-Soviet activities" on January 20, 1972, and sentenced to seven years in a Mordovian camp and another three years in exile in Yakutia. He left for Canada in 1988.

Volodymyr Romaniuk was one of the founders of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Kyiv Patriarchate, along with its first patriarch, Mstyslav, and was named Archbishop of Lviv in 1992.

He died on July 14, 1995.
