Reference: Valeriy Shevchuk is a Ukrainian writer of the sixties, a master of psychological and gothic prose, and an interpreter of the Ukrainian literary baroque.

He was born on August 20, 1939, in the family of a shoemaker in Zhytomyr. In 1961, he made his debut with the short story “Nastushka”. Valeriy Shevchuk is the author of about 500 scientific and journalistic articles. His works have been translated into 22 languages.

The artist has received the Taras Shevchenko State Prize of Ukraine, the Antonovych Foundation Prize, and the Malaniuk, Pchilka, Kopylenko, and Ogienko Literary Prizes. In 1999, he was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise of the V degree. On November 29, 2011, the Institute of Philology and Journalism of Zhytomyr University launched the Valeriy Shevchuk Prize, a creative award for the best book of prose published in Ukrainian.
