Reference: On August 29, 2019, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree on the celebration of the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine who gave their lives for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country.

The date was chosen to commemorate the biggest losses of the Ukrainian army in Donbas, which occurred during the breakout from the encirclement in Ilovaisk on August 29, 2014. The official symbol of this day is the orange sunflower, which represents the grief for the fallen Ukrainian soldiers in Donbas.
