“From Kolyada to Kalita”: the holiday of Ivan Kupala

A fragment of the TV film “Kupala” from the ethnographic cycle “From Kolyada to Kalyta” produced by Vinnytsia State Television (VDT-6), 2000.

Filming took place in various villages of Vinnytsia region: the village of Stina in Tomashpil district, the village of Talalai in Pohrebyshchen district, the village of Birkiv in Lityn district. The songs are performed by the trio “Syayvo” and the folklore group “Rusava”.

In the video: villagers demonstrate their Kupala customs and traditions on the holiday of Ivan Kupala: girls lead round dances, weave wreaths, wash themselves with dew, collect flowers, release wreaths into the water; boys install a willow tree.
