Reference: The Baturyn massacre was a bloody punitive action by Moscow troops on November 2, 1708, during which the large population of Baturyn, the capital of Hetman Mazepa, was destroyed. The troops slaughtered and burned the city's inhabitants, regardless of age and gender, and also looted and burned the city, destroying Orthodox churches. From 11 to 15 thousand people died, among whom women, children and the elderly predominated. Archaeological excavations or numerous burials of the victims have been discovered, where many of them were buried without Christian rites.
