She survived the Holodomor: memories of a woman from Kirovohrad region

In 2022, Nadiia Lytvyn was 95. Since her birth, she has lived in the village of Oleksandro-Mariivka, Petrivka village council, Kirovohrad region. She likes to have fresh bread at home. In 1932, when the Holodomor began in Ukraine, she was five years old. She remembers how the last of the food was taken from the house. She recalls how the houses in the village were empty after the famine. Nadiia Lytvyn dreams that people will never know what hunger is again.

Scholar Svitlana Proskurova says that the Stalinist regime used the Holodomor to exterminate wealthy peasants.

According to historian Serhiy Miliutin, there is no accurate data on how many people died during the Holodomor in the current territory of Kirovohrad region.
