Background: The Koryukivka tragedy was the largest and most brutal punitive operation of the Nazis during World War II. On the night of February 27, 1943, partisans of Fedorov's unit attacked the German-Hungarian occupation garrison in Koryukivka. In response, the invaders brutally massacred the civilians of the village. According to the act of the Chernihiv Regional Commission for the Investigation of Nazi Crimes of December 17, 1943, 6,700 people were killed on March 1 and 2, and 1,290 houses were burned, of which only 10 brick houses survived.
